An unidentified gunman has taken a number of people hostage at a post office in Colombes, a suburb of Paris.

The incident is said to have begun at about 12pm today, January 16, and the gunman was reportedly "speaking incoherently".

However, the gunman has now surrendered to police after negotiations. None of his victims was harmed.

It is not clear if his actions are linked to terrorism but BFM TV, citing an unidentified source, has said that they are not.

France has been on red alert ever since two gunmen, Cherif and Said Kouachi, stormed the offices of satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, on January 7 killing 12 people.
