No fewer than 25 people have been killed and over a 100 more declared missing following a huge flooding that hit northern Chile.

CNN quotes the country's disaster agency as saying over 30,000 people have been affected by the floods, while close to 3,000 are being housed in emergency shelters.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited the region of Atacama, which was hardest hit, oer the weekend. Tarapaca, Antofagasta and Coquimbo were also struck.

Meanwhile, authorities have sent tetanus, rabies, Hepatitis A and flu shots to the area in a bid to stem the spread of diseases.

There have also been efforts to restore electricity and water.
