2 people have been killed, and 48 people declared missing in the Atacama desert region of Chile as a flash flood hit the region.

BBC reports that Chile's emergency officials said one person was electrocuted on the street, while another died in a mudslide.

The storms have cut off roads, caused power cuts and severed communications, leaving no fewer than 38,000 people without electricity and 48,500 without drinking water.

Heavy rains in the Andes reportedly sent floodwater down into the valleys and towns below while in the city of Copiapo, the river burst its banks.

The government is now describing the situation in the desert town of Chanaral as "critical" even as President Michelle Bachelet cancelled her engagements and said she would fly to Copiapo.

Meanwhile, rescuers have begun evacuating people using helicopters because of fears of mudslides, also more rain is expected
