Following reports of a bomb threat received by German police, a Germanwings plane bound for Milan has been evacuated at Cologne-Bonn airport.

Al Jazeera reports that the threat was emailed to the airport 15 minutes before the plane's scheduled departure, prompting police to set the necessary measures in motion.

The flight 826 was headed to Milan's Malpensa airport on Sunday evening, and the tower in Cologne quickly alerted the pilot of the Airbus A320, which was taxiing towards the runway at the time of the report.

The pilot then took the plane to a position at the airport that is foreseen for such cases, where the passengers and crew left the aircraft.

Reports say there was however no sign of explosives found after sniffer dogs led by Federal police stormed the plane.

Germanwings planned to fly the passengers to Milan on another plane.
