War of the Tabs: Is the iPad Mini About to Be Unseated by Google's Nexus 7?

A few weeks ago, tech giants Google announced the release of their flagship tablet the Nexus 7. Expectedly, the reviews so far have been very impressive and even more impressive is the entry level price of $229 (about N36,000). With a screen size of 7 inches crammed with 323 pixels, 16/32Gb of memory and a micro-usb port to further expand the memory, the Nexus is looking like a great piece of hardware at a great bargain. But will these be enough to unseat the current tablet market champion, the iPad/iPad mini?

While the iPad mini screen beats that of the Nexus at 7.9 inches, Google’s tablet boasts a high-definition screen with 323pixels and a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor as against the Apple’s iPad 163 pixels and dual-core A9 processor. The Nexus 7 also includes a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, features that are identical to the iPad mini. The Nexus is also thinner, lighter (weighing in 290g) and boasts a battery life of 9 hours of HD video watching playback and 10 hours of browsing and ebook reading in addition to having in-built wireless charging which makes it possible to charge on the go. Also most importantly to gadget lovers, the Nexus is connected to hundreds of apps and games running at incredible speed with the option of either Wifi and 4G LTE.

While Apple still has the all out advantage of its rich iOS app ecosystem, there's no doubt the California based company still has likely stiff competition in Google particularly in terms of pricing. For about $100 (N16,000) less, gadget lovers can get the Nexus 7 which has most of the features that can be found in Apple. Also with no major creative breakthrough from Apple particularly after the somewhat disappointing outing of the iPhone 5 last year, Apple has faced some backlash from the consumer market and critics alike in the last year.

However, with Apple set to roll out new products before the end of the year, it remains to be seen if they'll regain the tech hardware market which they've held undisputedly since the release of the first iPhone in 2008. In the meantime, Google will probably give the Nexus 7 a major push even as positive reviews have already begun to trail the Nexus 7.
