Twitter verification

Finally, Twitter wants to give you the opportunity to get your Twitter account verified if you are a person of 'public interest'.

In the many years since it came to the fore, Twitter has verified the accounts/identity of most publicly influential users by adding a small blue tick next to their username.

No one really knew - or knows - how Twitter selected these people, but it looked like you had to either be a celebrity with a very competent publicist, or you had to know someone who knew someone at Twitter.

That will no longer be the case. Twitter announced on Tuesday that it will start taking applications from users who want to verify their account.

It could sound vain and silly that a lot of people will troop to Twitter to hustle for some blue ticks, but you will be surprised. There are also many benefits to having that blue tick next to your name.

The most attractive thing about the blue tick though is the exclusivity it offers. To give you some perspective, only 187,000 people are verified on Twitter out of the 310 million users it has. Yes, it's that exclusive and exclusive things are fun to have.
