Nigerian Twitter has gone beyond just being social

It has become one of the most interactive forms of conversation and discuss on the internet, with users engaging each other in thoughtful conversations and chats.

Media personality, Tosin Adekeye (@CuteKimani)

When I joined Twitter late 2009, I really didn't understand it. I couldn't figure out why I had to 'follow' a bunch of strangers who - for the most part - didn't really have any enlightening information to share.

However, with time, it started to grow on me and soon enough i became an addict. I'm talking borrow-money-to-subscribe kind of addiction and it was suddenly this very fun place where i could get information in real time as events happened all over the world.

And that's how far Twitter has come in this part of the world. Social media marketing is huge on Twitter now, football matches are no longer a veiwing centre or DSTV affair - you can follow any match or event on your timeline, and so on.

It has also become one of the most interactive forms of conversation and discuss on the Internet, with users engaging each other in thoughtful conversations and chats.

One of such engaging and enlightening 'tweetchats' is anchored by radio personality, Adekeye Tosin (@CuteKimani). She initially started her - now fairly popular - #KimaniOffAir tweetchats with minor celebrities, a couple of A-listers and now proven professionals like Debola Williams (Co-founder, Ynaija), Toyin Lawani (CEO, Tiannah Styling), Audu Maikori (former Chocolate City CEO), and Adekunle Ayeni (CEO, BlackHouse Media), who have all been lined up for interactive tweetchat sessions for the month of August.

Adekeye says she organises these chat sessions as a means of reaching out to the youths of today and hopefully inspiring them to do more and be more by learning from the respective personalities who talk about their experiences during theses tweetchat sessions.

This emphasizes how far social media has come in Nigeria and it can be utilized to foster the inspiration and motivate the future leaders of tomorrow.

The tweetchat #KimaniOffAir is hosted by @CuteKimani and takes place 8pm every Friday with weekly giveaways. Be sure to participate.
