Korean tech giant to host 40 African ministers at 5th Innovation Africa event

Over 40 African ministers, including their deputies, and cabinet secretaries from over 30 countries on the African continent are expected to meet and share ideas on education, innovation, and ICT skills

Samsung Electronics Africa has announced that it will be a part of the fifth Innovation Africa Summit which will take place at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kampala, Uganda from 30 September to 2 October, 2015.

Over 40 African ministers, including their deputies, and cabinet secretaries from over 30 countries on the African continent are expected to meet and share ideas on education, innovation, and ICT skills development on the continent.

“We are excited to be participating once again at this event and look forward to engaging with ministers and their delegations about innovations and solutions that respond to African problems. It is critical for Samsung not to have a blanket approach but rather tailor make solutions, and Innovation Africa gives us the opportunity to share insights with the different ministries and officials,” said Abey Tau, corporate citizenship & Public Affairs Manager for Samsung Electronics Africa.

Samsung will showcase the Solar Powered Internet School (SPIS) solution, which has already been rolled out throughout the continent in countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Mozambique, at the summit.

Nigeria CommunicationWeek reports that at the end of the summit, Samsung will surprise one local Ugandan school with the SPIS, thereby adding Uganda to the growing list f countries benefitting from the SPIS.

The SPIS is a 12-metre renovated shipping container that can house up to 24 students and is fitted with solar panels to power the equipment.

It is also equipped with a 65-inch large format display screen, a teachers’ laptop, Samsung notebooks, a printer, and a fan to cool the container.

Furthermore, the classrooms computer has been loaded with educational content the covers the entire basic education syllabus, which will allow facilitators to teach any subject or grade. Coupled with all of that is energy efficient LED lighting and an IP camera, which is designed to use 3G connectivity, thereby allowing remote classroom monitoring.
