Two people arrested over the murder of a blogger

Dhaka Metropolitan police official Mahbub Alam said the latest arrest was a result of the interrogation the police conducted on a group that was arrested earlier.

A Bangladeshi activist holds a candle, as they protest against the killing of secular blogger Niloy Chakrabarti in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Reports reveal that Bangladesh police have arrested two suspects over the murder of secular blogger NiloyChakrabarti.

Chakrabarti was killed at his home in early August by a gang of Islamic militants — the fourth killing in a string of similar attacks on secular bloggers in the country.

The reports say police arrested Kausar Hossain Khan, and Kamal Hossain Sardar — both 29 years of age — with the police saying the two were suspected members of banned Islamic militant group, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

Three other suspected members of ABT were also arrested two weeks ago over the killing of two other secular bloggers.

Dhaka Metropolitan police official Mahbub Alam said the latest arrest was a result of the interrogation the police conducted on the group that was arrested earlier.

Chakrabarti was the most recent victim of the killings, Avijit Roy being the first, hacked to death in February, while Washiqur Rahman was murdered in March, and Ananta Bijoy Ras in May.

The bloggers were using their social media accounts as a medium to rally supporters against religious fundamentalism, highlighting its negative impact on society.

Sources say ABT is the sixth Islamist militant group to be banned in Bangladesh.
