Online 'notice board' app coming to UNILAG

Flippy Campus helps students in Africa to get timely access to all campus-based information like hot topics, events, notices and announcements.

Flippy Campus CEO, David Mumuni

Flippy Campus is the first tech startup to win first ticket at the pre-pitching event of Demo Africa 2015. The company’s CEO, David Mumuni, bares his mind on what to expect after Demo Africa.

Congratulations on your selection as one of the 40 start-ups that will launch on the Demo Africa stage in Lagos in September 2015. How has the journey been?

It has been great with lots of lows and highs and more learning along the way. The pre-pitching event was very competitive with lots of good ideas and products with some good illustrations of how the application works. But in all I am very glad that Flippy Campus has the opportunity to launch on the centre stage at DEMO Africa.

How long have your company existed and what is the ownership structure?

Flippy Campus started in February 2015. It is the only service we have. There are four co-founders: David, Bright, Ammishaddai and Gideon. We have just secured funding from the Meltwater Foundation. So we have five partners now. Our product is Flippy Campus, which helps students in Africa to get timely access to all campus-based information like hot topics, events, notices and announcements.

What are your expectations and are you confident those expectations can be met at Demo Africa?

My expectation is to meet other start ups and see ways in which we can work together and support one another as well as meeting with potential investors who can come on board as we grow. We are also looking at having the application onto as many phones as possible. I know Demo will give me the platform to reach a huge number of people. Hopefully, we will launch the app in Nigeria at the University of Lagos when we go to Demo Africa. Our expectations are quite high.

Over 50 startups got acquired in the last five years. How prepared are you for such acquisition?

It is fantastic to hear that DEMO has supported these startups in such a way. Our current focus is to grow the company across the continent and help students get access to all needed information. When the opportunity of acquisition arises, we would be happy to carefully consider the possibility.

What unique value propositions are you bringing to the market with your solutions?

We are giving students timely access to all sorts of information as far as it is related to tertiary students, campus life, events, trending topics etc. We are different from other social media platforms because we focus on tertiary students and their interaction.

As the head of the team, tell us about yourself?

I am David Mumuni, CEO of Flippy Campus. I have a background in Computer Science and an MBA in International Business. And in all my education, I have had to miss out on some important announcement because I do not like visiting the school’s notice board. This propelled me to start Flippy Campus since most students are stuck to their phones. I thought, why can’t we have a virtual campus experience on our phones?
