The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and other stakeholders today, August 19, 2016 embarked on an awareness procession as part of activities to mark the 2016 World Humanitarian Day.

NEMA Director of relief and rehabilitation Alhaji Aliyu Baffale Sambo kicked started the walk from the Ambulance Bay beside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the agency's headquarters in Maitama.

Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo was represented by his adviser on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Dr Femi Oke-Osayintolu while Mr Habila Joshak stood in for the inspector general of Police.

Others stakeholders that include; United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM), National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) amongst others.

The director general of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi received the team on arrival where he also briefed the press on significance of the day and its theme "One Community."

The World Humanitarian Day is an annual event organised by the United Nations galvanize support for people affected by crisis and ensure that aid workers can safely and more effectively deliver to those in need.

August 19, was chosen by the General Assembly seven years ago to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
