Bayero urges court to dethrone Emir of Kano

Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

Usman Ado Bayero, one of the sons of former Emir of Kano, late Ado Bayero, has urged a high court in the state to nullify the selection of current Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as his father’s successor.

The case was filed on Thursday, December 10, 2015, by Bayero along with two other plaintiffs, Sadiq Yahaya and Hamza Madaki Cigari, Leadership reports.

The complainants are alleging that the selection process which led to Sanusi's emergence was marred by irregularities.

According to their lawyer, Rose Mbata, one of the kingmakers who selected Sanusi, Alhaji Bello Abubakar Tuta, had been restrained from parading himself as the Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta at the time hence his participation in the exercise rendered it null and void.

Bayero and his colleagues therefore urged the court to nullify the selection of Sanusi as the Emir of Kano and also reverse all actions he had taken since ascending the throne.

Sanusi Lamido had stripped the plaintiff’s older brother, Alhaji Sanusi Ado-Bayero of the title of Ciroman Kano in October after the latter ‘refused to pay homage’ to the Emir.

Presiding Judge, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu has adjourned the case to Tuesday, December 22 for continued hearing.
