The Senator went to war with Sahara Reporters after it reported that Melaye did not complete his first degree in Geography at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The publication subsequently published more materials, including photos and comments from the lawmaker's supposed classmate to further prove its claims.

"Sowore Will go to jail I promise," Melaye wrote on the microblogging site.

In the petition, Melaye named Omoyele Sowore, Temitope Olumuyide, Incorporated Trustee of Sahara Reporters Media Foundation, and Sahara Reporters Media Group Inc. as individuals to be investigated and forced to answer to the law for publishing a false and vexatious story that "insulted, impaired, harmed, damaged and assassinated" his character.

Prior to the petition, Melaye had filed a N5 billion libel suit against Sahara Reporters before the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court.
