Boko Haram fighters trained in Somalia- President

MUNICH (Reuters) – Fighters for the Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram have been trained in Somalia on Africa’s eastern coast before returning to West Africa, Somalia’s president told a security conference in Germany on Sunday. Ibori: UK police chief faces probe for alleged bribery

A Metropolitan Police chief, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, will be grilled by Members of Parliament this week over allegations that Scotland Yard and the Crown Prosecution Service were involved in a ‘‘deliberate cover-up’’ of damning evidence of police corruption. According to the Daily Mail newspaper, a court was told that the Met and the CPS repeatedly concealed documents suggesting that officers, investigating a former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, for fraud, were paid to leak details of the inquiry that could have helped him evade justice in 2012. B’Haram trained in my country – Somalian President

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia on Sunday said that fighters of the Boko Haram sect trained in his country before coming to Nigeria to carry out their heinous acts. According to Reuters, Mohamud said this while addressing a security conference in Germany. Reuters quoted him as saying that, “Without a stable Somalia, the whole region of the Horn of Africa will remain unstable and by and large, the African continent. Police comb Bayelsa creeks for Tompolo

The police have deployed policemen in the creeks of Bayelsa State to arrest a former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. It was learnt that the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, had ordered the Bayelsa State Police Command to carry out Tompolo’s arrest in compliance with the order of a Federal High Court, Lagos. The Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi Kolawole, confirmed to our correspondent on Sunday that the IG had directed his officers to apprehend Tompolo, who has also been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Senate to pass budget before March 31, says Ndume

The Senate will pass this year’s budget before the end of next month, Ali Ndume said yesterday. The Senate leader said the 2015 budget would end next month and it was the desire of the Senate to pass the 2016 budget before that time. Ndume said contrary to reports in the media, the Senate did not suspend its passage indefinitely, but only said February 25 “may not be feasible”.

OPEC members now keen to end oil glut, says Kachikwu

The mood inside the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is shifting from mistrust to a growing consensus that a decision must be reached on how to end the global oil price rout, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachikwu has said. Oil prices have slumped by more than 70 per cent to near $30 a barrel over the past 18 months as OPEC, led by top producer Saudi Arabia, sought to drive higher-cost producers out of the market by refusing to cut production despite a supply glut.

Falana to govt: recover outstanding $66.5b loans, others

Lagos Lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday urged the federal government to recover its outstanding $66.5billion in loans, royalties, levies and other recoverable revenues instead of “seeking an emergency loan of $3.5 billion” to fund ots ambitions N6.8 billion loan. In a letter to Minister of Finance Mrs Kemi Adeosun dated February 12, Falana hinted of his plan to seek the leave of the court “not later than February 29” to stop the government from taking the loan, since “you have not deemed it fit to react to the serious issues raised in the letter.’
