Govt to prosecute offenders for illegal waste disposal

He stressed that the state government would no longer spare persons who violated the state’s sanitation laws.

Governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola

Alhaji Abdulganiyu Oyeladun, the General Manager, Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA), issued the warning while speaking with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He stressed that the state government would no longer spare persons who violated the state’s sanitation laws, saying that such people would be prosecuted and sanctioned.

“We will effectively follow the rule of law to the last letter by prosecuting anybody caught dumping refuse indiscriminately in the state."

“I advise the residents to engage registered waste managers so they can effectively manage their waste for them,’’ he said.

Oyeladun said that the people should henceforth refrain from dumping garbage by the roadside.

He also called on law-abiding citizens to promptly report to his agency any person who contravened the state’s sanitation laws.

Oyeladun said that the state government would soon introduce a waste management levy, which would be paid by residents of the state for the evacuation and disposal of their garbage.

He said that funds accruing from the levy would augment the government’s expenditure on waste management projects.
