The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) says it has sanctioned seven medical practitioners for professional misconduct last year.

Dr Abdulmumini Ibrahim, the Registrar of the council, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ibrahim said that two out of the affected members were sentenced for three months suspension and withdrawal of professional certificates, while five went on appeal.

He explained that any practitioner sanctioned by the council’s tribunal have every right to appeal before the Federal Court of Appeal within three months of such sanction.

The registrar also said the council received more than 100 complaints within the period under review, describing large number of those complaints as frivolous and lacking in merit.

"The council receives over 100 complaints last year but some of them were frivolous, they have no basis. In the course of investigating complaints and when they are found to be frivolous they are thrown out at that level.

However, Ibrahim said the cases were not exhausted last year because of the dissolution of the council’s board.

"They are still pending. The council tribunal is like other regular courts. When somebody is prosecuted before that court he or she is given a chance to appeal same with the tribunal.

"If somebody is sanctioned he has the privilege of taking the case to the Appeal Court within three months of sanction, and if he fails to do that within the stipulated period the sanction is implemented or enforced,’’ he said.
