“Extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear”

The US Secretary of State said further that the battle against Boko Haram can only be won when the government tackles the reason why people join the group.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry addresses a news conference in Kenya's capital Nairobi, August 22, 2016.

Kerry arrived in Nigeria today, August 23, 2016, to hold discussions on Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

The US Secretary of State said further that the battle against Boko Haram can only be won when the government tackles the reason why people join the group.

“We also know that beating Boko Haram on the battlefield is only the beginning of what we must do,” Kerry said while giving a speech in Sokoto.

“Building public trust in government also requires cooperation from the military and law enforcement. Extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear,” he added.
