'We remain on strike' - Resident doctors insist

Although the doctors confirmed that they had a meeting with the government, they said no decision has been made regarding the strike.

The chairman of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Osogbo chapter, Folarin Olarewaju, said there is no truth in the statement credited to the Minister of of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, that the association has suspended the strike.

Ngige was quoted by Channels TV on Friday, September 1, as saying that NARD suspended the strike after a meeting with the Federal Government.

Although Olanrewaju confirmed that the association indeed had a meeting with the government, he said no decision has been made regarding the strike.

He said the association is expected to hold an emergency executive committee meeting on Sunday, September 3, where a decision will be made.

The resident doctors had earlier threatened to go on strike from September 4, if the federal government does not meet their demands.

NARD said it would proceed on a "total indefinite industrial action" from Monday until all the issues are resolved.

The doctors are demanding the immediate enrolment in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) among others.

The association also said neither the federal nor state governments showed commitment to the resolution of issues at stake nor honoured previous agreements.
