Don calls for resuscitation of reading culture

Dr Goke Alabi, a senior lecturer at the Osun State University, Osogbo, has called for the resuscitation of the reading culture in the country.

Alabi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Osogbo that Nigerians jettisoning the reading culture had contributed to the nation's low level of development.

"It is very unfortunate that the level of reading among Nigerians, irrespective of age, has drastically dropped.

"The advent of the social media and cable television network has been substituted for reading among our people; only very few people are taking reading seriously again.

"This trend is dangerous to the development of the nation, as there is no way a country will develop without a thorough reading culture,’’ he said.

The university teacher, therefore, called on the three tiers of government to enact a new policy on education that would promote the reading culture.

Alabi also suggested the provision of more libraries in schools with necessary education materials and facilities that would always attract people to them.
