"I don't want a lawyer" - arraigned suicide bomber tells court

Idris, who spoke in Hausa and was interpreted in English, said he did not need a lawyer to defend him in the case.

A 22-year-old suspected suicide bomber, Suleiman Idris, who was arraigned at Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday, May 21 rejected the service of lawyer when he was offered by the court.

Idris, who spoke in Hausa and was interpreted in English, said he did not need a lawyer to defend him in the case.

The police arraigned him on one count charge after he was caught with materials, suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos in August, 2014.

His charge read, “that you, Suleiman Idris on August 18, 2014 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by causing apprehension of fear to members of the public while in possession of gadgets suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 116 (D) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected a summary trial.

When Idris was asked by the Magistrate, P.A. Ojo if he wanted a lawyer to defend him; he said, “I don’t have a lawyer and I don’t want a lawyer.”

Ojo however admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case has been adjourned to June 29, 2015 for trial.
