From 20, the death toll in the  invasion of Godogodo, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has risen to 40, Vanguard reports.

According to sources from the  Southern Kaduna Peoples Unions (SOKAPU) - the umbrella body of the 67 tribal groupings of Southern Kaduna, more deaths may be recorded.

But the Kaduna State Police spokesman, ASP Usman Aliyu, denied knowledge of the rise in the death toll, although agreed that the casualty figure could be higher.

Armed men believed to be herdsmen had stormed Godogodo last weekend, killing 20 people.

The herdsmen have terrorised the community for two months, carrying out series of attacks and counter-attacks from the Godogodo indigenes. This has left people dead, houses and properties destroyed.

On the casualty figures, a youth leader, who pleaded anonymity said: "On Sunday, we were able to get 20 corpses.

"But after the attackers were chased out this morning (yesterday), we went into the town and recovered badly burnt corpses.

"We retrieved corpses that were so badly burnt that you would not know if they were males or females. We now have about 40 dead persons. There could be more because we are still searching."

A statement by SOKAPU, through its leader, Dr. Musa Solomon, in Abuja, urged the  Federal Government and Kaduna State government to set up permanent security formations in the area to curtail the unwarranted killings.
