Robbery syndicate in gun battle with police, 1 killed

According a statement from the police in Enugu, some members of the robbery gang fled with bullet wounds.

The police in Enugu have killed a notorious armed robbery and car snatching suspect in Ikirike Layout, Enugu during a gun battle.

A statement from the spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, said that the suspect was gunned down on Wednesday, May 6, during a gun battle with the police.

"The police gunned down one of the hoodlums following a distress call when they were about snatching a black Nissan Xterra car with registration number GG 620 AG at gun point.

"Policemen at Ikirike Division trailed the hoodlums and engaged them in a fire battle.

"They were over-powered when one of their gang members was gunned down. His corpse has been deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozalla,’’ the statement said.

It also said that some members of the gang fled with bullet wounds and appealed to the public for information on anyone found with bullet wounds.

According to the statement, some of the items recovered from the gang are one English made single barrel gun, a locally made pistol and the said car.

In another development, the police in Nsukka Division also nabbed a 25-year-old man from Alor-Uno for being in possession of a locally made revolver pistol.

It said that the suspect used the pistol for armed robbery and cultism in Nsukka.
