The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, on Monday said that the FCT Administration will improve its Waste Management Programme to tackle the problem of waste management in Abuja.

The Minister made the pledge when he paid an unscheduled visit to the Waste Transfer Stations in Apo, Mpape and Kubwa.

Bello said waste transfer stations had to be developed to cater for the ever increasing level of solid waste generated due to Abuja’s expansion.

The minister insisted that waste transfer stations were very necessary for every modern city and Abuja could not be an exception.

He directed all relevant departments to ensure rapid development of the transfer stations to augment the existing dump sites.

The minister said that the stations must be developed to sort all kinds of waste including metal, plastic and other biodegradable wastes for easy recycling and other uses like energy generation and organic manure.

"Today, waste is wealth and the FCT Administration must take advantage of the new technology and volume of investments in the sub-sector to make Abuja a clean city.’’

Bello said that the Administration was working to provide the framework and platform to attract investors in order to open another vista of employment prospects.

The minister also paid a similar visit to the 220-Bed Utako District Hospital under construction to appraise the level of work.

The FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr Babatope Ajakaiye, was on the entourage of the minister during the inspection to the sites.
