Buhari pays last respect to late matriarch

Also in attendance, was Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), who led 38 other bishops and 300 clerics to preside over the ceremony.

 

President Muhammadu Buhari and other notable Nigerians from all works of life were at Ikenne, Ogun State,to pay their last respect to the matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.

Speaking at the Burial ceremony, Buhari said “I came back last (Tuesday) evening from Iran and I had to make sure I do not miss the last rites for Mrs. Awolowo because she earned it. This is the third time I have been here, and I hope the family will try and continue to hold together as they have been doing.”

“Let me appreciate those who have come to participate in this ceremony. When I was in the car, I discussed with the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on the late Mrs. Awolowo and all the nation is doing for her. While Chief (Obafemi Awolowo) was all over the country and the world, she was effectively managing the family,” he added.

Mrs. HID Awolowo was the wife of Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo(GCFR), the first premier of the Western Region.

She died at a land age of 100 years.
