Petrol shortage will end soon – Okonjo-Iweala

Dr Okonjo-Iweala gave the assurance on Monday, May 4, 2015, after a meeting with the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) in Abuja.

The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has said that the fuel scarcity being witnessed in some parts of the country will end soon.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala gave the assurance on Monday, May 4, 2015, after a meeting with the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) in Abuja.

One of the agreements reached during the meeting was that unsettled subsidy claims would be paid even after the incoming government of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari takes over.

“We have appealed to them (oil marketers) and you have heard them saying, following the payment of the N154bn, things will ease off. We’ve spent a considerable time talking about this and we welcome the news that have been announced by the marketers and we thank them,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

“On our own side, we have discussed the issues they have put on the table and we are looking into them, government is a continuum and you find out that whatever the issues are, they would be resolved so that Nigerians will not suffer,” she added.

The Executive Secretary of MOMAN, Thomas Olawore also said that the petrol shortage would soon be over as the issues that led to it have been resolved.

“You all recall that there were some issues about movement of products to the retail outlets, following the release of the last payment. The owners of the trucks have agreed to allow their trucks to start loading. As we speak, there have been loading,” Olawore said.

Fuel queues emerged in the country again last week after transporters went on strike over money owed them by the marketers who were in turn being owed by the Federal Government.
