House of Assembly urges security agencies to beef up security

The Speaker, Kabiru Adjoto also decried non-implementation of resolutions by law enforcement agencies in the state.

Edo House of Assembly has appealed to the various security agencies in the state to beef up security around Esan South-East Local Government area to forestall further loss of lives in the area.

The appeal was in a resolution which was sequel to a matter of urgent public importance raised by Mr Festus Edughele (APC-Esan South-East) during plenary on Tuesday in Benin.

The House also resolved that the various security agencies should put machinery in place to locate those kidnapped as well as to unmask, arrest and prosecute those behind crimes in the affected communities.

Edughele said that in the last one week there had been reported cases of indiscriminate killings and kidnapping in the communities.

According to him, in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 2, Mr Ukaki Igberease, who left for his farm, was declared missing and his where about is still unknown.

He said communities such as Ubiaja, Illushi, Oria, Ewohimi and Ugboha were currently witnessing high rate of insecurity which had resulted to the killing and disappearance of innocent persons caused by activities of hoodlums and miscreants.

“A patrol team of the Nigeria Police was ambushed by unknown gunmen killing a police officer, while others sustained gunshot wounds’’.

Mr Damian Lawani (APC-Etsako Central) said: Section 14b of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, stated that the security and welfare of the people shall be primary purpose of government.”

Lawani urged the security agencies to wake up to their responsibility.

Other lawmakers sympathised with the people of the communities and called on relevant security agencies to convene a meeting with the vigilante to forestall further loss of lives.

Subsequently, the Speaker, Kabiru Ajoto, directed that copies of the resolution should be sent to the State commissioner of Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence, Director of State Security Service, Governor and Head of Service, Esan South-East Local Government.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader of the House, Mr Roland Asoro (APC-Orhionmwon), had announced the gruesome murder of Mr Efosa Omoregie in Oben Community by herdsmen last week.

The lawmaker, who under matter of personal explanation brought the attention of the house to the murder, lamented the spate of killings.

The Speaker, Mr Adjoto, decried non-implementation of resolutions by law enforcement agencies on security challenges in the state.

He directed the Clerk of the House, Mr James Omoatama, to compile all adopted resolutions of the House and forward them to all security agencies for implementation.
