Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Today, April 7, is World Health Day and the theme is “Depression: let’s talk about it.”

Below are five things that can predispose a person to depression:

  1. Poverty

  2. Unemployment

  3. Chronic medical conditions

  4. Substance abuse disorders

  5. Stressful or traumatic life events

The factors were listed by Consultant Psychiatrist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Dr. Raphael E. Ogbolu while speaking with The Guardian.

Ogbolu also said that about 3.9 per cent of Nigerians have depression.
