President says looters have started returning Nigeria’s money

Buhari however said that his government would not stop until it had recovered all the money which had been stolen from the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that some persons who stole money from Nigeria’s coffers have started returning the funds voluntarily.

Buhari however said that his government would not stop until it had recovered all the money which has been stolen from the country, according to Punch.

The president made the comments today, November 24, 2015, during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“On corruption; yes, they (the past government officials) are still innocent. But, we are collecting documents and some of them have started voluntarily returning something. But we want all,” Buhari said.

“When we get those documents, we will formally charge them to court and then we will tell Nigerians to know those who abused trust when they are entrusted with public funds. So, the day of reckoning is gradually approaching,” he added.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai had earlier said that a former minister’s associates had tried to return $250 million in obviously looted funds to Buhari through him.

“When you say you want to refund, it means you are admitting that you took what was not yours,” El-Rufai said according to the New York Times.

“I said, ‘I am a governor, I am not involved in this. I will pass on your message,” he added.

Buhari has vowed to deal with corruption in Nigeria and is also seeking the help of foreign governments to recover the country’s looted funds.

Nigeria’s former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke is currently in the eye of the storm after being detained on money laundering charges in the United Kingdom.

Alison-Madueke and her associates are alleged to have looted billions of dollars in oil funds from Nigeria’s treasury.

The situation has led Buhari to take control of the nation’s oil industry in a bid to sanitize it.
