Terrorists take over Monguno Barracks

The insurgents launched simultaneous attacks on Maiduguri, Konduga and Monguno on Sunday, January 25, and were repelled from the first two towns but managed to take over the latter.

Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly taken over the military barracks in Monguno, Borno State.

The insurgents launched simultaneous attacks on Maiduguri, Konduga and Monguno on Sunday, January 25, and were repelled from the first two towns but managed to take over the latter.

The barracks are now under Boko Haram’s control and the fate of about 1,400 soldiers, who were reportedly deployed there, remains unknown.

A senior military officer, who chose to remain anonymous, told Vanguard:

“Monguno has fallen, Monguno has fallen. We fought them all night long but they took over the town, including the military barracks there.”

The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade also confirmed the reports saying that soldiers in Monguno including a “Brigade Commander and some of the troops”, were wounded and had to retreat from the town.
