The funds were meant for the Presidential Initiative on the North-East, which is domiciled in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The upper chamber took the decision at the plenary on Tuesday, October 4, while raising an alarm on what it described as the "mounting humanitarian crisis" in the North-East region.

In view of this, a 10-man Adhoc Committee under the chairmanship of Senator Shehu Sani has been constituted.

The committee is expected to  investigate monies released to the Initiative so far and as well the alleged diversion of grains and other food items from the Strategic Grains Reservers, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other sources for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East.

The lawmakers also agreed to make an individual donation of N300,000.00 to the IDPs’ welfare.

The unanimous resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled "Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the North East” sponsored by Senator Baba Kaka Bashir Garbai (APC, Borno) and 18 others.
