IPOB threatens violence against President Buhari
Tensions have recently been heightened in the region after the military's controversial Operation Crocodile Smile II had led to confrontations between soldiers and members of separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In reaction to the president's visit, the group's spokesperson, Emma Powerful, released a statement on Monday, November 13, issuing a stern warning to President Buhari to cancel his trip.
He warned that the president's presence on Biafran soil will provoke the proscribed terrorist group to violence and criticised southeast governors and the Ohaneze Ndigbo for their involvement in the president's visit.
The group hinged its agitation on the president's culpability in the death of 91 IPOB members who were allegedly killed in confrontations with the Nigerian Army in September.
