The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide has slammed the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi over his comments on the establishment of the Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta state.

The group also said the minister’s comments, showed that he was opposed to the establishment of the tertiary institution in the Niger-Delta.

Amaechi in a Town Hall meeting organised for the people of the South-South region in Akwa-Ibom state, said the cost of the land (N13b) was outrageous, so the Federal Government could not continue with the project.

The minister of state for petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu on the other hand, disagreed with Amaechi, saying the government will complete the project no matter how much it costs.

The IYC also commended Kachikwu for standing up for the Niger-Delta people and supporting that the area be developed.

The group said the minister of petroleum is a worthy son and a true representative of the region.

Daily Post reports that  the IYC spokesman, Eric Omare, in a statement said “We strongly condemn Rotimi Amaechi’s anti-Niger Delta position and commend the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu for standing with the people of the Niger Delta region and endorsing the development of the Niger Delta region.

“Mr. Kachikwu clearly demonstrated to the world that he is a worthy son and representative of the Niger Delta region.”

Rotimi Amaechi also told the people of Niger Delta not to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) if the party doesn’t develop the region.
