Legislators planning to impeach president

Members of the House of Representatives have reportedly listed over 50 impeachable offences that the president has committed

According to reports, members of the National Assembly have begun making plans to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.

Members of the House of Representatives have listed over 50 impeachable offences that the president has committed, Vanguard reports.

The legislators will reportedly begin impeachment proceedings against Jonathan when the House resumes on Wednesday, December 3.

The 50 offences, which are said to constitutional violations, will form part of the impeachment notice which will be served on the president.

A member of the House told Vanguard that both chambers of the legislature had decided to work together to impeach Jonathan for “incompetence, corruption and unprecedented impunity.”

The member reportedly said:

“I’m sure you read the reports today that senators are going to move against Jonathan. Now you can confirm that the impeachment thing is not about APC. It is a non-partisan cause. We have all resolved that the man (President Jonathan) must go.”

“Never in the history of Nigeria has a leader displayed such crass incompetence as we have seen in President Jonathan. It is glaring and you can feel it. Mr. President, with due respect, has shown that he is not capable of running this country. That is the basic truth,” he added.

The members of the National Assembly have blamed President Jonathan for the police invasion of their complex on November 20 but Jonathan’s aides have said that he had nothing to do with it.
