With a specific focus on supplying energy to poverty stricken areas around the world, Musk is confident that the new Tesla energy products will allow people to live completely off the grid when coupled with solar panels or wind turbines.
Is the Tesla battery the answer to Africa’s energy crisis?
These rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are not only designed to store and provide electricity for people facing energy poverty, but as Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive explains, they will also work to slash energy costs for home owners around the world.
Friends of the Earth's renewable energy campaigner, Alasdair Cameron, said having solar panels and a home battery in the future could become as common as central heating.
"Just as the so renewable sources, like wind and solar, are changing the way we make and use energy - and electricity storage is an important part of that change."
Musk is hopeful about sourcing locations for micro-grids or self-contained systems of solar panels and batteries that could be used to provide off the grid energy to the rural areas. With sub-Saharan Africa being predominately energy stricken, the future is looking rather bright for these areas.
