The Nigerian government has begun the construction of the N142.6 billion Lekki deep sea port in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos.

This was disclosed on Saturday, May 16, 2015, by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero.

Ado Bayero also stated that the construction of the port showed the government’s commitment to making the project a reality.

“As a port authority, we see potential for growth in the Nigerian market and strive to realise it at all times. Therefore, as we begin the consummation of our strategic alliance with the promoters of this project and look towards a bright future, we assure you that the NPA will not waiver in its commitment to the project,” Bayero said.

“The occasion signifies our resolve to tap into the high untapped market occasioned by port capacity gap in Nigeria,” he added.

The Managing Director of the Lekki Port, Aswani Haresh, also speaking at the event, said that the commencement of construction marks the beginning of a 41-month construction period for the biggest maritime project in the country.
