President Buhari set to supply homes in the six geo-political zones

The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed his intention to reduce the housing shortage.

President Buhari

Speaking at the 35th Annual General Meeting and International Symposium of Shelter Afrique, themed: "Housing Africa’s low Income Urban Population", the president said his administration would commence direct housing supply soon.

Represented by the FT minister, Mallam Mohammed Bello, Buhari said this direct housing supply, combined with the N40 billion, earmarked for the implementation of a comprehensive housing programme, would reduce the 17 million housing deficit.

Earlier, the president revealed the exact number of houses needed, per year.

According to him, Nigeria needs one million housing units, every year, in order to end the shortage by 2020.

In March, 2016, Buhari revealed his plan to deliver these one million houses, adding that it would involve help from foreign investors and their local partners.

"Some estimates put Nigeria’s housing deficit at about 16 million units.

In our successful campaign to win the general election last year our party, the APC, promised to build a million housing units a year.

This will turn out to be a very tall order unless the Federal Government builds 250,000 units, and the 22 APC States together manage another 250,000 units.

We invite foreign investors together with locally-domiciled big construction companies to enter into commercial housing building to pick up the rest.’’
