According to the Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, the goal is to ensure that travellers move freely during this period.
“There is going to be presence of our people in those areas and I want to say that no obstruction will be permitted on that bridge; any broken down vehicle within a will be removed. Because we have placed heavy duty tow trucks around the bridge, we have placed men around the bridge and we have bikes to move up and down to ensure that people comply with lane discipline. So we want to assure the general public that there is no fear, don’t try to help yourself, we will be there to assist to ensure that we have free flow of traffic in and out of Onitsha.”
In order to maintain order on the bridge, he urged motorists to avoid going one-way/against traffic, and cooperate with traffic officers.
“Attention is being placed on the issue of one way; as we all know one way or counter -flow is a very dangerous way of using the road. That means somebody using the road in a counter-way to the normal flow of traffic and we have seen that this kind of thing leads to head-on collision and deaths. So what we have done within the last few days is to be on the road redirecting the flow of traffic in the normal way. The highway is a public road where people must be able to move freely.”
