"Roots" miniseries premiered on Monday, May 30, 2016, and Twitter reacted.

Many viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the Atlantic slave trade, white American and European violence against black Africans.

"Roots" paints a historical portrait of American slavery, focusing on the journey of one family and their will to survive and to carry on their legacy despite hardship.

"Roots" stars Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Matthew Goode, Mekhi Phifer, James Purefoy, Regé-Jean Page and Malachi Kirby.

Based on African-American writer Alex Haley’s 1976 bestseller, "Roots: The Saga of an American Family", the original miniseries aired in 1977.

The miniseries and the novel portrays Haley’s family lineage, kicking off with his ancestor Kunte Kinte in Gambia.

HISTORY premiered it on Memorial Day, Momday, May 30, as part of a four-night, eight-hour event series developed by HISTORY, from A+E Studios.
