Shorts are completely different from features. There’s no room for complexities such as subplots and multiple themes. When putting together your script, focus on telling the story of one or two characters. The simpler, the better.

What resources are available?

Short films don’t necessarily have the same type of budget as a full length feature film. In a lot of cases, funding is aided by friends and family members who may even appear in the film. Short films are shot in enclosed spaces and controlled environments. However, make sure you reccee and select locations that looks authentic. You don’t need to feel stressed about making it look like a big budget film.

Visuals are a key element

It’s not just about the dialogue. Making use of just talking heads of your characters would be boring. Consider including visual backstories, colour and music to your work; these elements aid in telling a story. Use this visual medium to interpret scenes.

Create a connection and engage the reader

In some way your story should create a connection with its target audience. It’s important to make an impression within the first few minutes of the film as you have limited time.

Feature a memorable character

Build a character that’ll stay in the memory of the viewer. Film and television series are about the characters - especially characters with strong personalities and challenges or goals the viewer can connect with.
