“Suicide Squad” is an anti-superhero movie you just might like

Quite frankly there were too many unneeded villains in this movie (but hey who knows what DC Comics plans on doing next).

Cast of 2016 movie Suicide Squad

I honestly didn’t think I would for two reasons: the fact it was a superhero movie made up of a team of supervillains and secondly - the reviews blurbs I read were rather discouraging; I actually saw a headline that described the movie as “excitingly dull”.

“Suicide Squad” is an action superhero movie based on DC comics, about super villains also known as metahumans who are given the task of either saving the world or instantaneous death if they refuse to help. This task force is put together by a government official by the name Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who insists that that a task force of “The Worst” needed to be created to protect the world.

The beginning of the movie did drag a bit as each villain, their powers, abilities and for some weaknesses were introduced to the audience - Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Deadshot (Will Smith), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Enchantress; a witch who possesses Dr. June Moone (Cara Delevingne), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Slipknot (Adam Beach). Of course each villain came with a back story.

With these skilled superhumans being forced to work together in a task force my question was who is going to lead?

Waller gives this leadership role to Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), who is one of the best Special Forces officer in the country (and also Moone's boyfriend).

As events unfold, it was clear the serial killer Deadshot was the Alpha male of the pack. Another key villain in the movie was Joker (Jared Leto) - despite all the teasers and key features in the trailers, the psychopath with green hair didn’t appear in that many scenes.  Rather disappointing.

If all the villains are heroes, then who is the protagonist in the story?

It’s Dr. June Moone the possessed archeologist. Waller has control over her as she holds her heart in a briefcase magic can’t open.

Interestingly the “Suicide Squad” are forced to clear up a mess caused by the government as the witch escapes from Waller and decides to take over the world with her brother.

Quite frankly there were too many unneeded villains in this movie (but hey who knows what DC Comics plans on doing next).  The film also featured cameos from popular superheroes including Batman and the Flash.

“Suicide Squad” didn’t really hold a lot of suspense or tension for me. Maybe I liked the film because of Will Smith and his star performance or the frivolous Harley Quinn who brought a quite a bit of humour to the film. Plus I'm not a comic book/ super hero movie buff.
