Actor talks "Shuga," acting, balancing school and work, AMVCA nomination

In a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, Olumide Oworu who plays Weki on and also recently received a nomination for his character in "A Soldier's Story," spoke on lots of interesting topic.

From his career to acting, balancing school and work to having Tiwa as his TV mum, the actor was a delight to chat with.

“Everytime I see that poster with my name.... It’s hard to put it in words, especially when you’ve been doing something for a long time, and now it just feels serious.

Now I feel like people are paying attention to the hard work that this young, focused individual is putting in, and I feel like everything is just paying off.

2016 is looking good. I like how I can look back on my life and see progression.

Having Tiwa Savage as my TV mum was absolutely amazing. I remember when we were about to do the script read with the director, I didn’t know who was going to play Sade.

So I’m just there like “ok, well it may just be one cool person that will just come and play Sade, and we may not even talk,” and then boom, in walks Tiwa Savage.

I was very excited, like I was doing back flips in my head, there was like fire works going on. But I had to act all cool like it was nothing, but in my head I was excited.

She is so down to earth, she is so cool. She will buy herself food, she will buy me food. We went out a couple of times. I feel like we have a genuine relationship off set as well."

"Right now, balancing work and Uni is so hard. I didn’t understand how hard it would be. I remember sitting in my house and I used to be like “all these guys that will just enter Uni and be dropping out. They are not serious. They can’t even focus, must they mix those two things?”

Then I got to Uni, and it hit me – the workload is a lot. And then there's acting by the side, which is a lot of work as well because you have to read your script, character analysis, character breakdown.

Shooting schedules might be conflicting with you academics schedule. There’s a lot of compromise, sometimes you have to drop somethings because you have exams.

I’m just staying positive. I do what I can in the time that I can, but at the end of the day, school is the priority."

"That is a difficult question because movies allow you be multiple characters. You can do 5 movies and be five different people, and work on five different sets, and get exposed five different times.

On a series, you can actually see a character grow. You can see the progression. You get to imprint yourself on the minds of people watching the show, and they get to love you more.

I don’t know if I can pick movies or series. I love both. At the end of the day it’s all about your schedule. And if my schedule can take both, then I’m more than willing to do movies and TV as well.

“My acting journey started in 2000, I was about 6. Before that, I was already doing voice overs, and I was modeling for mostly corporate brands. I have always been very animated in voice conversations, and my hands are always going all over the place. I like to give expressions based on the gist I’m giving. So I figured my mum just thought we should try acting.

She took me to audition for the show called “So I went there, they liked me, I got on the show, and after I stayed there for eight years.
