5 things I want to see in Nollywood this 2016

While we enjoy watching and living their private lives with them on social media, we also would love to see them make better use of their social media pages to promote their career, movies and Nollywood as a whole.

It’s a new year, and there are

Last year, we presented you with nine things we learnt about Nollywood in 2015, now we want to discuss five things we want to see in Nollywood this year.

Every Nollywood actor and filmmaker would always say “Hollywood didn’t achieve all this in a day, we will get there.” The above phrase already sounds cliché.

Fine, we are telling better stories (most Nigerians would disagree though), we have better filming equipment, better actors, but what about some overlooked things, which could actually make the industry look serious?

What about the packaging, which is what would entice people, bring back lost fans, and do much more than one would expect.

Here we go with five things Nollywood could better in 2016;

It’s without doubt that some of our filmmakers are yet to understand the importance of a movie trailer. Not just a trailer, but a captivating one. While some filmmakers release perfect trailers, some others release incoherent clips from an upcoming movie, while the rest are yet to understand why a trailer should be released.

I have found myself suddenly interested in a movie because of its trailers, teaser and behind the scenes clip. A great trailer doesn’t always mean a great movie, but you can at least entice us into supporting your movie, before we realize how much of a waste of time it is.

It’s always disappointing to realize that a movie set to premiere in the cinemas, has nothing but some tacky Instagram set photos to offer.

The below "Out of Luck" trailer was everything! Did it deliver? Probably not as much as expected, but it made you and I leave the comfort of our beds and skip our weekend rest for it.

We all know how beautiful, fit, controversial and ‘hot’ our actors are. While we enjoy watching and living their private lives with them on social media, we also would love to see them make better use of their social media pages to promote their career, movies and Nollywood as a whole.

It is always heart breaking (pitiful more like), to visit an actor’s page and feel like you are on a runway, a battle ground or in a motivational class. While we are interested in every aspect of their lives, we also would love to know what they are up to career wise (after all, their acting career drew us to them in the first place.)

When you’re not releasing a ‘hit’, star studded, powerful and all that 'better wait for it' movie, why hoard an upcoming project from fans?

I started anticipating the movie “Falling,” after I came across its poster. The trailer unfortunately didn’t do the magic for me, but the poster told a story - I was already anticipating a love triangle. The poster did for me what its trailer couldn’t do.

We already know how beautiful you all are, so hopefully, our filmmakers would spare us a poster with mere pretty and handsome faces, and serve us with something that would leave us anticipating.

Maybe we aren’t there yet, but it would be fun if weekend box office records were made available weekly, or even after a movie has completed its ‘reign’ in the cinemas.

It’s funny how every ‘anticipated’ movie turns out to be a ‘record breaking movie’ or ‘highest weekend movie’ without any official statement from cinemas or whoever it should be coming from.

It’s always the producers of the movie tweeting about how much of a hit the movie was. 70% of the time, the figures are absent, all we have are tweets, which are supposed to convince movie lovers on how successful a movie has been.

Once upon a time, no box office information was available at all, but then again, we could do better though.

For an industry with different bodies like Association of Movie Producers, Actors Guild of Nigeria, it still has a long way to go in being organized.

A synergy between these, the censors board and government included, would help present a more organized Nollywood.

It would increase their distribution and investment opportunities. It would make the industry appear serious, even if it’s made up of more unserious people.

The other day, a colleague was working on an article, and typed in the name of an actor(a popular one), zero or little info popped out.

I was asked "how many movies has he been in," and I boldly replied "how am I supposed to know when he doesn't even remember his first movie."

A more structured Nollywood means an intense and united fight against this menace called piracy. But then again, Nollywood for now is still a divided industry, where people think more of their movies and how well it’s doing, until they become victims.
