The new "Game of Thrones" ratings record beats its fifth season finale's 8.1 million viewers.

HBO aired its sixth season finale of "Game of Thrones" on Sunday, June 26, 2016.

The episode which came with lots of explosive moments also found a way to set an explosive record.

The Sunday episode was watched by 8.9 million people, setting new record for the HBO drama, and beating the season five finale which was watched by 8.1 million people.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the fantasy show averaged over 23 million viewers per episode this season, including streaming, DVR recordings and repeat showings - up 15% from last year.

Titled "The Winds of Winter," the episode ended with Daenerys finally coming back to Westeros; Jon Snow as king of the North and Cersei sitting on the Iron Throne.

In an interview with EW, executive producers of show, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, talked about what to expect from show in 2017, and confirmed that the HBO show will end after two seasons.

Based on the popular book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, the Emmy-winning fantasy series returns for its seventh and penultimate season in 2017.
