Would you pay someone to pop the pimples on your back?

Environmental factors add to your back breakouts, and they tend to be worse in hot weather.

And while most of your breakouts take place on your face, many guys have another problem area: the top of the back near the neck, and extending down between the shoulder blades.

So what do you do? Shower, exfoliate, and crane your neck in the mirror to try to see how bad it really is. Not an ideal solution.

Enter the "back facial." These spa treatments are exactly what they sound like.

They take the sequence of events you'd experience in a facial—cleansing, moisturizing, and blackhead extraction—and apply them to your back.

If it sounds crazy to you, then you're not one of the men already paying for this on a monthly basis. Here's what you need to know about a "back facial" before you dive in, back first.

Just because this "facial" is for your back, it doesn't mean that a spa is going to treat you with any less care.

"In essence, it's almost identical to what happens in a facial for your face," says Nicole Villagomez, General Manager of Spa Space in Chicago, where a 45-minute back facial starts at $105. "We treat it with the same regard."

That means cleansing, exfoliation, and, as needed, extractions—the spa term for applying pressure to blackheads or pustules. Many spas will even add a hydrating mask, or a light chemical peel if requested.

A good back facial starts with an assessment of your skin. After all, you might be suffering from dry skin without a pimple in sight. Or your back might be an acne minefield.

That said, professionals acknowledge that the extraction part of the treatment is most often what gets guys in the door. After all, this is one place you can't "extract" by yourself.

While tools exist to help with extraction, many spas won't use them, even on your back.

"We really don't like to use extractors because those can damage the skin more than they help," says Villagomez. "Typically our aestheticians use their fingers—obviously wearing gloves—or use sterile cotton swabs to apply more pressure."

Take a step back: why are these back breakouts happening to you? It could be because of the things you do to get rid of your back hair.

"A lot of guys shave or wax their backs," says Villagomez, "and a lot of the acne is just ingrown hairs."

If you're in this group, the same spa that waxes your back may also be the place to extract it. It doesn't hurt to ask. (At least, it doesn't hurt much.)

That's when you sweat more, and spend more time in sweaty clothes—in fact, just showering soon after a workout can help prevent breakouts.

The other culprits include sunscreen, bug spray, and everything else you're layering on your skin. Yes, you need these, but you also need to rinse them off, along with the accumulated grime of your beach day.

According to Villagomez, a guy with persistent back acne might want to get a back facial monthly. But there's stuff you can do at home to extend the results.

Clean up after workouts, and look for non-greasy products. If you really want to care for your back, use some of the other facial products from your (or your girlfriend's) medicine cabinet.

"At night, a clay mask can help draw out blemishes," says Villagomez. "The same clay mask you'd use on your face."

The "back facial" isn't new—we were able to find it on spa menus in several major cities. The surprise may be the treatment's rising popularity.

"The service has been on our menu since we opened," says Villagomez. "Skin is everywhere on the body, so we want to treat it all. But I will say that back facials have gained popularity—especially with men."

Whether you're planning a beach vacation or just want to look good for next weekend's date, the pimple-popping might be worth the price.

"It's customized, but extractions are the cornerstone of the treatment," says Villagomez. "They really go at it and clean up the area.”
