Police arraign 26 members for public disturbance

26 members of the Islamic sect, Shiite, have been arraigned by the police before a magistrate court for disturbance.

The Shiite members that include Hauwa’u Aminu, Aisha Aminu, Zahra’u Zubairu, Dahira Abdulrahman, Aisha Musa, Lawal Idris and 20 others were charged for conspiracy and inciting public disturbance.

The 26 Shiite members were charged with criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, disturbance of public peace and inciting public disturbance.

The Prosecuting counsel, Mr Sunday Ekwe, told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on Oct.12, at about 1.00 p.m

Ekwe said all the 26 Shiite members criminally conspired and unlawfully assembled themselves and blocked Ibrahim Taiwo Road up to Kofar Mata to Emir palace.

“The accused persons unlawfully restraint the members of the public from having access to the road and their places of business, a conduct that disturbed and cause breach of public peace “

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97, 102,113 and 114 of the Penal Code

The accused pleaded not guilty to the content of the First information report (FIR).

The counsel to the accused persons. Haruna Magashi, applied for their bail, adding that most of them were nursing mothers and had families to take care of.

He assured that they would not interfere in police investigation or jump bail

The Chief Magistrate, Muhammad Idris, granted bail to all the accused persons in the sum of N100,000 each with two reliable sureties each in like sum

Idris said one of the sureties must be a Village head or a Ward head of where the accused reside.

He said both the accused and sureties shall deposit two recent passport photographs and their addresses would be verified by the police.

The case was adjourned till Nov.7, for further mention.
