Take disaster issues seriously, agency urges Nigerians

Udeinya appealed to residents in the south eastern part of the country to always attend NEMA sensitisation programmes

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged Nigerians to take issues relating to disasters seriously to avoid destruction of lives and property.

The South-East Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Martin Udeinya, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday.

Udeinya appealed to residents in the south eastern part of the country to always attend NEMA sensitisation programmes on disaster risk reduction.

He added that flood disasters that sacked people from their homes in some states; communal clashes that claimed many lives, among others, had made the job of NEMA quite stressful.

According to him, NEMA writes to communities before embarking on such sensitisation programmes but many ignore such programmes because some disasters are either man-made or human-aided disasters.

He urged Nigerians to always attend sensitistion programmes done by NEMA in communities; schools and market places to know disaster related issues in their domain.
