Minister says FG committed to repositioning health sector

The minister said the government would reposition the sector through workable national policies.

Nigeria's Health Minister, Professor Isaac Adewole

Adewole said in Benin on Monday at an event to mark eight years of stewardship of Prof. Michael Ibadin, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

He said no country could develop without a healthy workforce and that the best way to go was to invest in the health sector.

The minister, however, said the health sector in Nigeria would remain committed to local production of vaccines.

Adewole further said government might consider reducing the tenure of CMD’s to a single tenure to stabilise the politics associated with their appointments.

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Philip Shiabu, gave an assurance that the state government would continue to work closely with the institution for better service delivery.

Obaseki said to improve healthcare in the state, the government had begun the process of ensuring that all Local Government Areas in the state had well-equipped general hospitals.

He assured the hospital management that government would collaborate with them to eradicate malaria from the state.
