NGO urges youths to shun violence ahead of elections

Husaini urged the journalists to apply the techniques they acquired to take the practice of journalism to a higher level.

A non-governmental organisation, Search For Common Ground (SFCG), on Saturday called on youths in Bayelsa to shun acts of violence in the December 5, 2015 governorship election.

The organisation’s media coordinator, Mr Isa Husaini made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on the sidelines of a two-day workshop for journalists.

The body had organised an intensive training programme on election coverage for broadcast journalists from five radio stations in Bayelsa.

He appealed to the Nigeria Union of Journalists to organise regular conferences and workshops to build the capacity of media practitioners.

The media coordinator appealed to journalists to be neutral and non-partisan in election reportage.

The coordinator also warned the youth to shun any act of violence or thuggery in elections.

"If a politician approaches you to go and hijack or perpetrate evil, ask him where your brothers and your children are,’’ he said.

He urged them to be agent of peace in their various communities for Bayelsa to have a free and fair election.
