First Lady, Aisha Buhari and Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose

First Lady, Aisha Buhari is currently in a mud wrestling match with Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose and his camp, but unfortunately for her, they have nothing to lose.

The trouble started when, on June 21 2016, Fayose accused Mrs Buhari of being part of a 2009 bribery scandal which involved US Congressman, William Jefferson.

“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson,” Fayose claimed through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi.

One would think that Mrs Buhari, being the classy lady that she is, would ignore Fayose and his cronies, especially since they mixed up the Halliburton Scandal with the Jefferson scandal.

However, she decided to get in the mud with them through a series of shocking tweets in which she described Fayose as anunchained mad dog.

“Enough is Enough Fayose. A mad dog that isn't chained. I refuse to keep quiet. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH FAYOSE IS AN UNCHAINED MAD DOG! If Buhari is 73 years old, I Aisha am 45 years old, I have more than enough energy to face you,” the tweets, sent out from the First Lady’s official handle read.

Despite the outrage elicited by these tweets, which eventually led to their deletion, Mrs Buhari didn’t dissociate herself from them or apologize for them to put herself above the fray.

Instead what followed was a highly publicized trip to the US to show Fayose and his friends that she is not a fugitive.

Unfortunately, Mrs Buhari’s trip to the US only gave Fayose’s camp more rope with which to drag her even deeper into the murky mud.

The Ekiti branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in responding to the trip, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of using “Photoshopped” pictures to support its claim that Mrs Buhari visited the US.

“The question is, did she travel to USA or Qatar? If the Presidency has not been bold enough to tell Nigerians that Mrs. Aisha Buhari travelled to the USA on official visit, only a party of scammers like the APC will go on the rooftops to celebrate photoshopped pictures as evidence of visit to USA,” the Ekiti PDP said via a statement released by Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo on August 8.

Adebayo went further to ask if Mrs Buhari “arrived and departed from the USA like a spirit”.

Mrs Buhari doesn’t seem to realize that Fayose and his people are mud dwellers, they thrive in the dirt, they love it, like pigs love it, so anyone who wants to wrestle with them must also love the mud.

Mrs Buhari is the wife of Nigeria’s president, she is a woman of calibre and esteem and integrity, so she has no business exchanging words with people of questionable character, people who will stop at nothing to stain her hard-won reputation because they have none to boast of.

Therefore, it would be in the First Lady’s interest to refrain from responding to Fayose’s people, either in words or in actions, unless of course she intends to become a permanent resident of the mud ring.
