Pay our outstanding stipends - ex-millitants

The Federal Government has been urged by the Ijaw Youth Council to pay the outstanding stipends owed ex-militants in the Niger Delta.

Mr. Eric Omare, Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Warri, Delta State.

“Niger Delta ex-militants under the amnesty programme are being owed five months arrears of stipends,’’ he said.

Omare said that the non-payment has made it difficult for the ex-militants to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

“We also call on the National Security Adviser, Gen. Babagana Munguno, under whose office the amnesty programme is domiciled, to take steps to immediately effect the payments to avoid unnecessary hostility,” he said.

However, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Paul Boro promised that the federal government is looking into the issue, urging those concerned to be patient.

“I am assuring all beneficiaries under the programme that arrangements are being made to fast-track the payment of their stipends as soon as the Amnesty Office receives its allocation,” Boroh had said.
